Curteis Brothers forged ironwork was established by John and Sam Curteis in 1990. Now run by Sam Curteis we operate from a forge in Kommetjie, Cape Town.

Sam has been involved with design and the making of forged ironwork for the past twenty years. He was trained by his older brother John, who did his apprenticeship with the master blacksmith Cecil Luck and in various forges in England. This traditional training in ironwork techniques is evident in the attention to detail in the work that comes from the Curteis Brothers forge.

Working in the forge together with Sam are the blacksmiths Eric Gxikigxa, Patrick Qawula, Nicolas “Ace” Kolwana, and Anthony Kolwana.

The Curteis Brothers forge operates as a traditional ironwork forge. We heat the iron in our coal-fired forge and then hammer it on anvils or with our blacksmith’s power-hammer, twisting and forging it into leaves, curls and scrolls. The iron is worked or ‘wrought’ into shape.

“I am hands on in the workshop and on site, working closely with the requirements of the client,” Sam says, “and have a passion for creating pieces that will last for many generations to come.”

We have worked with interior designers and architects, as well as individual home-owners. Our work has been featured and acclaimed in various magazines.

We produce a stock range, as well as undertake bespoke items.
